The chopped cheese sandwich is a New York City bodega classic, a hearty assemblage of ground beef, onions, peppers, American cheese, and adobo seasoning, all chopped and mixed on the grill, then served on a hero roll. It's an outstanding sandwich, and it's the main draw at this tiny take-out shop.
The chopped cheese here is juicy, meaty, messy, and very satisfying thanks to its inspired blend of ingredients and seasonings. The owner of the shop (and its sister branch in Kichijoji) is a veteran of the legendary Hajji's in East Harlem, where chopped cheese originated sometime back in the 1990s, and he remains faithful to the original recipe.
Philly Cheesesteak is another big-city sandwich, and they do a fine version here, though it's not as intensely flavored as the chopped cheese. But perhaps you were longing for a NY-style Italian hero sandwich instead. If so, the Kichijoji Fat Boy Sandwich will satisfy your craving. Overstuffed with generous layers of salami, mortadella, and provolone along with lettuce and tomato, it's a hefty sandwich, especially by Tokyo standards, and we've found it big enough to share.
Chicken Over Rice is a New York street-cart specialty, and here it comes in generous portions and proper flavors whether you order the all-chicken or the lamb-and-chicken version. Side dishes include regular fries, sloppy joe fries, cheese fries and nachos.
The drinks menu features American sodas, beers and frozen pina coladas (alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions). There are a couple of chairs where you can sit and wait for your order to be prepared, with a soundtrack of typical New York music playing in the background.
